As a factor is investigated my challenge is to find which media: paper, gouache, cloth, printing ink, which color, scale and composition best conveys it and its motive. I work on paper because its ephemeral quality is singularly representative of the human condition. My pieces are medium to small to foster intimacy with the viewer.
In sharing my reflections of what is possible as oppose to expected, my narrative images broaden the definition of what it means to be an African American woman. In doing so, one finds that her experiences hold universal truths for the human condition. I celebrate the beauty of accepting who you are as you are; I view my work as quiet empowerment. |

THE ARTIST’S STATEMENT
I am a spiritually motivated, African American woman and artist. My work deconstructs my everyday experiences to create narrative images that defy what is expected to show what is possible.
By deconstructing everyday experiences one sees the agenda of others, societal expectations and stereotypes created by the ominous ‘they,’ family history, cultural influences, and personal aspirations and disappointments. These, not always, recognizable, factors are interdependent and carry varying influential weights. Characterizing these factors via the use of mixed media allows a visually engaging patchwork construction of our persons. |
