THE ARTIST’S STATEMENT Years of being immersed in the study of calligraphy and lettering-arts is a great source of inspiration in the creation of my paintings. Letters and text, whether legible or illegible, are incorporated within every piece of my art. From contemporary to traditional, large canvasses or small framed pieces, my work is greatly influenced by the love of words as well as color.
Facing a blank canvas, I begin to work by applying heavy coats of gesso for a base of texture. Over that, bold color is applied randomly…either covering the entire surface or in smaller sections. Onto this foundation, layer after layer of color, gestural strokes, masking and metal leafing, etc. create depth and texture. Text, always the final layer, is added in the form of quotations, poetry and/or personal narrative. From a distance, the text itself is usually seen as just another shape or more texture within the piece. But, as the viewer gradually discovers the written word, they are drawn into a compliment of word with color until the painting becomes full of discovery inviting everyone to take an in-depth look.
I also love working on handmade and watercolor paper by creating smaller pieces utilizing watercolors, pastels, and collage techniques as a means of illustrating quotes and poetry. Many clients come to me when they want personalized gifts and mementos. |
